In general, Indian rivers can be divided into two parts.

Perennial Rivers

Perennial rivers that have a water effect throughout the year are called Perennial Rivers, the rivers shown in blue on the map. These types of rivers originate from the Himalayas. Examples of Perennial Rivers are Indus, Ganga and Brahmaputra etc.

Non Perennial Rivers

There is no effect of water in these rivers throughout the year, these rivers are shown with black colour on the map. These rivers generally depend on rain water. Mahanadi, Krishna, Narmada and Godavari are examples of such rivers.

Indian rivers can be divided into two parts from the point of view of their origin-

  1. Himalayan Rivers – The rivers originate from the Himalayan mountain range, and these rivers are perennial. The Ganga, Indus and Brahmaputra river systems are examples of this.
  2. Peninsular Rivers – These rivers flow through valleys and mainly depend on rainwater. There is no water in these types of rivers throughout the year. These types of rivers include Narmada, Tapi, Godavari, Krishna, Kaveri and Mahanadi river system.
