‘Loaded’ has the feel of a thesis that’s been padded out into a self-help book, with the author referencing a lot of academic research, including her own. This is not necessarily a bad thing, as it was the more research focused parts of the book that I found most interesting. It’s not all about how to get money or what you should do with it, but how people behave when they do have money, or other people’s behaviour towards or perceptions of people with money.
The central message of the book is that you shouldn’t treat your finances as just income and expenses, but to think in terms of resources and needs. Managing your finances shouldn’t just be about money coming in and money going out, rather your resources to creates streams of income that satisfy our personal needs. The examples of people using their skills to create another stream of income felt a little trite, and not particularly inspirational.
Whilst ‘Loaded’ does contain some interesting snippets of information, I found that I didn’t really get enough from it for me to recommend it to others. It’s a little unclear who this book is primarily aimed at, but I guess it would be a useful read for those on lower incomes who are struggling to balance their finances. You would need to question if this book would be any more useful than the plethora of others aimed at this demographic.
