My GS Marks (CSE 2021)
- GS1: 118
- GS2: 119
- GS3: 92
- GS4: 117
- Total: 446
Overall GS Strategy: Key Takeaways
1. Focus on the Syllabus + PYQs
- UPSC repeats themes. Go topic-by-topic and match with previous year questions (PYQs).
- Prepare static parts of the last 5 years’ Mains papers. This gives an edge over others.
2. Follow This Answer-Writing Format
- Intro:
- Start with a fact, a quote, a definition, or a recent event.
- Body:
- Use subheadings if needed. Write in points (7–8 per subpart is ideal).
- Conclusion:
- Suggest a way forward, link to schemes, SDGs, DPSPs, or use slogans like “Sabka Saath Sabka Vikas” (with English translation).
3. Fulfill the Demand of the Question
- Identify subparts clearly.
- Complete the paper — never leave answers unfinished.
- Structure = success.
4. Writing Style: Points vs. Paragraph
- Points for most questions.
- Paragraphs for certain Ethics (GS4) case studies.
5. Attempt Order: 15 Markers First
- Start with 15-mark questions to avoid damage due to time shortage.
- 10-mark questions have less variation in marks even if done in a rush.
6. Practice > Reading
- Read selectively.
- Write test answers regularly. Structure even those you don’t attempt.
Test Series: The Game-Changer
- 43 papers in Attempt 1, 26 in Attempt 2, 19 in Attempt 3.
- Structuring answers (intro + conclusion + bullet points) even for unattempted tests helps a lot.
Recommended GS Books
- Polity: Laxmikant
- History: Spectrum + NCERTs
- Geography & Environment: Shankar IAS
- Other topics: Use internet + test series
