The state of West Bengal was formed on 26 January 1950. Its capital is Kolkata, which is also the largest city in the state. There are a total of 23 districts in the state.
At present, the Chief Minister of West Bengal is Mamata Banerjee, the Governor is L. Ganesan. There are 294 assembly seats in this state. The number of seats in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha is 42 and 16 respectively.
The total area of the state is 88752 square km. Which makes it the 13th-largest state in India. According to the current figures, the GDP here is ₹ 17.43 lakh crore and the per capita GDP is ₹ 1,68,167.
The official language of this state is Bengali, but apart from Bengali, languages such as Nepali, Urdu, Hindi, Oriya, Punjabi, Santali, Kamtapuri, Rajbongshi, Kudmali, Kurukh and Telugu are spoken here.
History Of West Bengal
The Mughals arrived in Bengal in the 13th century. And at the end of the 15th century, European merchants entered here. After Europe, the East India Company controlled this area. The British Empire started in Bengal itself. After getting independence in 1947, the former part of this place became Bangladesh. And the western part became the state of India.
Foundation Day is celebrated on 18 August in West Bengal. The state animal here is the Bengal tiger, the state bird is the white-necked caudilla, the state tree is Chiton and the state flower is Harsingar. Sikkim is situated in the north of this state, Bangladesh in the east, Bay of Bengal and Odisha in the south, Bihar, Jharkhand in the west, and Assam in the northeast.
The major rivers of West Bengal are Ganga, Bhagirathi, and Hooghly. Durga Puja, Kali Puja, Basant Panchami, Bijaya Dashami, Bhai Phonta, Holi, Mahavir Jayanti, Buddha Jayanti, Rathyatra and Christmas, etc. are the major festivals here.
The popular sports of WB are cricket and football. A big cricketer like Sourav Ganguly is from this state.
