Types of Prayers and Rakats
There are five types of Namaz mentioned in Islam, and the number of Rakats in each prayer is given below.
Fajr Rakat (Morning Prayer)
- This prayer is performed before sunrise.
- It is a four Rakat prayer, two Rakat each.
- First two Rakats are performed as Sunnat.
- The remaining two Rakats are performed as Farz.
Zohr Rakat (Noon Prayer)
- First four Rakats are performed as Sunnat.
- The next four Rakats are performed as Farz.
- The last two Rakats are again performed as Sunnat.
- Two Rakats nafil. (Nafil Namaz is optional but beneficial).
Asr Rakat (Afternoon Prayer)
- It is done between noon and sunset. It is an eight Rakats prayer.
- First four Rakats are performed as Sunnat Non-Mokadda.
- The other four Rakats are performed as Farz.
Maghrib Rakat (Evening Prayer)
- It starts just after sunset. It is a seven Rakats prayer.
- The first three Rakats are performed as Fard.
- The remaining two Rakats are performed as Sunnat.
- Two Rakats nafil. (Nafil Namaz is optional but beneficial).
Isha Rakat (Night Prayer)
- First four Rakats are performed as Sunnat Mokadda.
- The next four Rakats are performed as Farz. The next two Rakats are again performed as Sunnat.
- Two Rakats nafil. (Nafil Namaz is optional but beneficial).
- Three Rakats performed as Witr.
- Again two Rakats nafil. (Nafil Namaz is optional but beneficial).
